God of War’s Kratos revealed to be bisexual as a joke

Outing someone is just not cool but if it’s a fictional character you created I guess that’s OK, and that’s exactly what God of War director David Jaffe has done.

“Not to get all JK Rowling but when I was working on the origins of Kratos for the first games I knew he was a raging bi-sexual until he settled down with his wife. So Kratos is officially bi. Oh and the Oracle from GOW1? Lesbian, straight up! Boom!” he tweeted.

Now whilst that might come as a shock to basement dwellers, it’s actually in keeping with his origins. Kratos was a Spartan warrior and in the armies of ancient Greece having a bit of man sex was good for morale of the unit. For example the Sacred Band of Thebes troop was made up entirely of 150 pairs of male couples.

Greek philosopher Plato wrote about having male lovers in the military saying  “he would prefer to die many deaths: while as for leaving the one he loves in a lurch, or not succoring him in peril, no man is such a craven that the influence of Love cannot inspire him with a courage that makes him equal to the bravest born.”

Of course it wasn’t just the soldiers who were at it, everyone in ancient Greece was at it, in fact they didn’t even identify as LGBTQ+ as everyone was doing everyone so it was normal.

There are a couple of hints in the most recent game that Kratos may have had a male lover in the past. In the game he reveals that his son, Atreus, is named after a great Spartan warrior who “was happy and filled with life”. When he was killed in battle, Kratos carried the warrior back to Sparta on his shield and personally buried him. Kratos says he named his son Atreus because he “fills him with joy.”

Except.. it’s all a ‘joke’. Ha bloody ha David Jaffe, you utter prat.

“I 100% can respect LGBT folks may feel bait and switched because I can imagine they have been waiting a long time to see great, heroic, and long-overdue representation in games. It was never my intention to suggest that sort of needed representation would be a joke,” he tweeted.

“I think it’s beyond time; it was time back in PONG days,” he adds. Er, no, not at all you muppet, “If you were offended by THAT part of my joke, I am sorry for that. Was not my intention” he concludes.

Well, another epic fail for David Jaffe, please go away and never be seen or heard of again.
